A practical, step-by-step approach
Step 1
Keep access to the source conversation
Before switching chats, make sure you can still open the original conversation. With ThreadBridge, you can capture a conversation in a supported desktop browser or import an accessible ChatGPT share link. A deleted conversation cannot be reliably reconstructed from a short summary.
Try this: Open the original chat and confirm the relevant messages are still available.
Step 2
Capture the information you actually need
Preserve key requirements, completed work, outstanding decisions, links and exact error messages. A generic summary can overlook constraints that matter when you resume a complex coding, research or planning task.
Try this: Write down what was decided, what changed most recently and what must not be repeated.
Step 3
Build a continuation pack
Use a structured pack that separates confirmed facts from assumptions and identifies next actions. ThreadBridge can create a pack from captured content; AI analysis sends the cleaned transcript to its analysis service only when you explicitly request that analysis.
Try this: Review the pack for inaccurate conclusions, missing constraints or sensitive details before using it.
Step 4
Start a new chat and verify context
Paste the continuation pack into the new conversation and tell the assistant which job to resume. A new chat does not automatically inherit the full message history, attachments or tools from an old chat.
Try this: Ask the assistant to restate the current goal and next actions, and cross-check critical facts against the source.
Step 5
Checkpoint long-running projects regularly
Save a fresh pack after major changes, releases or decisions. A short, verified checkpoint is easier to review than trying to reconstruct a very long thread after you have moved on.
Try this: Include a date, project name, last completed step and any known unresolved blockers.
Important limitation
A continuation pack is an aid to resuming work, not a perfect copy of all messages. Review sensitive material before creating or sharing one. Treat ChatGPT share links as accessible to anyone who has the link.
Common questions
Can I continue a ChatGPT conversation in a brand-new chat?
Yes, by carrying a curated summary or continuation pack into the new chat. The original conversation history is not automatically transferred in full.
Does ThreadBridge recover deleted conversations?
No. The source transcript or an accessible share link must still be available; a continuation pack cannot recreate missing source messages.
Do I need to install a browser extension?
The current desktop beta supports capturing an open conversation in Chrome or Edge, or using an accessible ChatGPT share link. Check the product page for the currently supported beta packages.
Is the entire transcript automatically uploaded?
No. Capturing and storing the transcript happens locally. If you explicitly request AI analysis or pack generation, the cleaned transcript is sent to the ThreadBridge analysis service.
